Used Auto Parts

Posted in Used Auto Part Resources with tags , , , , , on March 27, 2008 by pilotdave
Used auto parts not only include car parts but also trucks and other vehicles. There are many websites that sell and buy used auto parts. These business firms salvage what they can from junkyards and improve on the quality of that part before selling it. If a person is interested in selling used auto parts then it is advisable to start the business on-line so that the seed money required for the business is less compared to any business that is initiated in the normal market. The United States of America produces so many cars in a year that it is difficult to recycle every part that is produced and the junkyards have started to pile up. The used car parts market is very big in the US and is cluttered with useless parts that people try to sell. Recognizing and differentiating between useful parts and the useless ones is a skill that is required in this business.

Numerous salvage yards buy used automotive parts and usually purchase the sheet metal of the body and late model trucks or cars with usable parts. This means that almost all salvage yards owners are interested in buying automotive parts that are in working condition.

Used auto parts come in many varieties and the quality of a used auto part can be judged according to its age, the make, whether it was still in use, and according to the wear and tear that it has withstood. Many gas stations sell used auto parts but the quality of these parts may not be very good. If a person is interested in buying and selling used auto parts then a salvage yard can provide the seller or the buyer with myriad choices.

There are retail outlets, online stores, mechanics and salvage yard owners who readily agree to buy or sell used automotive parts to anyone who is interested. A simple garage sale can also be a solution for selling or buying used auto parts.

Locating Used Auto Parts

Posted in Used Auto Part Resources with tags , , , , on January 28, 2008 by pilotdave

If you are looking to find auto parts and you don’t want to take the time out to call one place after another and you can actually have vendors bid on your parts you may want to try an auto parts locating service. The advantage here is you save a bunch of time and you actually get others to do the work for you versus you having to do the calling yourself. In some cases you can actually get the parts for ridiculously low prices and especially on used engines or transmissions as there maybe an auto recycler in a particular area that may want to move some parts they have and really discount the part.

There really are no setback to using the service as normally they are free and all it takes is a few seconds to submit the request and then you just wait on email replies and just choose what auto parts dealer you want to deal with. Be sure to look for things like BBB memberships and customer satisfaction. It is easy to find maybe a low price but be sure the place you are dealing with has a good reputation or at least they are accountable to someone. Last thing you want to do is buy from someone and then find out they are not who they say they are and wham! you have lost a thousand bucks.

At any rate, its a very time efficient way to get things done and find the part you need a surprisingly low prices.

Applications Related to Used Auto Parts

Posted in Used Auto Part Resources with tags , , , , on January 22, 2008 by pilotdave

Used car parts are fine to use if you are like me! I like every thing new. Don’t worry, used parts are just fine. For brake booster rebuilds, the two with the best reputation are “Booster Dewey” and “Karps”. Karps is the one mostly used. If you are looking for a source of rebuilding kits, I’m not going to be able to help you. I’ve not run into a source for them. If you are a member of a club, post your question on there web site; someone will have an answer for you. WPC is the main Chrysler club, as you probably know, but I’m sure there is a 300 club also.

Some vendors advertise new cores on eBay, so I’d look there first. I tried that on my 67 Imperial, and they couldn’t help me. But I’ve found that a good radiator shop can rebuild and even restore any heater core I’ve ever had to repair. I have gotten rebuilt power brake boosters for a 64 Chrysler from AutoZone and from NAPA in the past – they are another source at around $100 exchange.

I can tell you my experience, I use Silicon Grease, and available at most auto parts places as it is designed for this purpose. It is clear grease in a tube, with a consistency similar to that of Vaseline, but without any petroleum content, so it will not attack the rubber or any plastic you put it on – it is totally inert in that respect.

It is used in space instruments for this exact reason and I’ve always used it on my cars -it keeps the weather-striping and rubber bumpers under the hood etc. just like new. I put it on in a thin coat with my fingers, rub it in a bit, and then wipe off any excess that might come in contact with someone’s clothing. GE makes it, and so does Dow-Corning. The DC part number is DC-4. I got my last tube from the NAPA store – it was the GE brand, but it is just the same to use and the way it works.

I have a 1996 Jetta Trek with a door lock problem. The locking mechanism fails to actuate any doors other than the one in which I actually use a key. And, after using the key, I heard the pump running too long, as well as the telltale hissing which revealed a leak under the dash on the d/s. This all seemed to happen after I had a stereo system installed.

Running speaker wire, they must have inadvertently broke my vacuum tubing connector, right at the wire/air-line harness between the inside lower part of the d/s door and the chassis where it all feeds through the body into the fuse box area above the pedals. The tubing connector nipple (or what looks like might have been one) is sheared off, and I have two flush ends, which of course will not seal when I reconnect the harness.

Get some vacuum tubing from your local car parts store like they use under the hood on engines, and make sure it’s just big enough to push that little plastic pipe into, but not so big that it slides right in. There shouldn’t be a need to even glue it or seal it if the fit is tight enough.

How to Replace an Used Engine

Posted in Engines with tags , , , , on January 7, 2008 by pilotdave

When replacing a used engine there are a few things to keep in mind. First is decide if your going to keep your transmission or get a used transmission to install as an assembly with the used engine(front wheel drive cars the assembly has to come out from under vehicle).

Disconnect the battery, drain fluids from radiator, and remove radiator. If pulling transmission block wheels pull drive shaft and plug the tail of the transmission to keep fluid from spilling. Then remove distributor cap (if equipped), unbolt exhaust (depending on car may be easiest to remove exhaust manifolds from engine, some cars it’s easier to unbolt them from the exhaust pipe). Remove the starter and alternator. Attach engine hoist. If leaving transmission in car unbolt from engine, be careful as it may drop, use a jack to support. If pulling transmission disconnect shifter linkage, cooler lines (if equipped)any electrical connections, and speedometer cable (if equipped).remove and label all electrical connections on engine. If engine has a turbocharger disconnect it to avoid damage. Double check that no wires or cables are still attached to engine, and remove motor mount bolts (make sure there is tension on hoist or it will drop). Use hoist to slowly lift engine from car making sure to keep assembly clear of hitting any body part. You may need to tilt engine to clear firewall or other body part.

Now is a great time to clean that road grime from the engine compartment, and do some painting. While apart check the motor mounts for wear.On the used engine you should replace wear items such as water pump, timing belt, spark plugs, and wires.Installation is reverse of removal, just go slow and line everything up. Before starting engine make sure and change the oil.If the transmission was left in the car make sure the fluid is full before starting engine also.

Used Engines

Posted in Engines with tags , , , on January 7, 2008 by pilotdave

If you are looking to find a replacement engine for your car it is always smart to find a used one first. The price reduction on used engines can be great and in most every case the engine was running before it was pulled or the car would not have been driving to get in a wreck!

Some things to check first:

1) Ask where the engine is coming from

2) Can you get a car-fax for the mileage

3) Can you get the warranty details

Overall its a great way to save a bundle and keep that car or truck of yours running for years to come!
